Family Learning

Family Literacy, Language & Numeracy

Family Literacy, Language and Numeracy programmes aim to:

  • Improve the literacy, language and numeracy skills of mums
    dads and carers of young people;
  • Improve parents’ ability to help their children learn; and
  • Improve children’s acquisition of literacy, language and numeracy.

The following programmes are for mums and dads who do not have GCSE English and/or Mathematics at Grade C or above.

Play & Language

(0 - 3 years)
These courses aim to emphasise the importance of talking and playing with young children to encourage language development. They are delivered in small friendly groups in Early Years Foundation Stage settings including Children’s Centres and community venues within Bexley. They are usually 6 weeks in length, and consist of both an adult -only and joint session each week. A crèche will be made available for the children during the adult session.

Play with Language & Numbers

(3 - 5 years)
These courses aim to emphasise the importance of talking and playing with young children to further encourage language and number development. They are delivered in small friendly groups in Early Years Foundation Stage settings, including school nurseries, children’s centres and community venues within Bexley. They are usually 10 weeks in length and consist of both an adult-only and joint session each week.

Keeping Up With the Children

(Key Stage 2 - Years 3 & 4)
These courses aim to give you a better understanding of what and how your child is taught with regard to literacy and mathematics at primary school. They are delivered in small, friendly groups in primary schools and at Adult Education College Bexley in the morning, afternoon and evening to accommodate family and work commitments. An opportunity to gain a literacy or numeracy qualification, with competence equivalence to GSCE, will be made available following these courses.

Helping Yourself and Your Child with English

(Nursery, Reception & Year 1)
These programmes are for families where English is not the primary language at home. They include a broad coverage of skills including Family English, numeracy and ICT and are not therefore just Family ESOL courses. They are delivered in small friendly groups in children’s centres and selected primary schools. If the adults have pre-entry level language needs, it might be more appropriate for them to join a beginners’ adult-only ESOL course first and then progress to a family language course.

Helping Yourself and Your Child with Literacy / Numeracy

(Nursery, Reception & Year 1)
These programmes are delivered over several weeks in small friendly groups during the school day. On a weekly basis the parent and child have the opportunity to work on an activity together.

Wider Family Learning

These programmes are offered according to specific funding guidelines issued from the government and are aimed at mums, dads, grandparents and carers with their children, who do not have any formal qualifications and do not have GCSE English or Mathematics or its equivalent. They are delivered in a variety of settings including the Adult Education College, schools, libraries, children’s centres and community settings, and aim to support children’s learning and development.
