Initial Assessment

What is Initial Assessment

Learners on some accredited courses may be expected to sit an Initial Assessment prior to being accepted on to a course. This is a paper based test to assess your literacy and numeracy skills. All courses which require an Initial Assessment are marked in the brochure with this symbol: IA

Exemptions

You may be exempt from sitting an Initial Assessment, if:

  • you hold GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above (or equivalent). Proof of qualification will be required.

What happens next?

If successful in your Initial Assessment your enrolment will be confirmed. If you are unsuccessful, you will be referred to our Adult Literacy & Numeracy department or, if appropriate, ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) to improve your literacy and/or numeracy skills before embarking on an accredited course.

Dates

Your Initial Assessment must be booked before your course starts.
